I have the same problem! We met a very nice couple while we were walking the dog and we've done a few things with them. I've also had the good fortune to work with some great people about my age, although DC has such a big suburbia, it's really hard to hang out on a consistent basis. My hubby has also worked with really good people our age. Luckily, some actually live around the corner from us.
The hardest thing we've found, is that DC is also a very transient area. No one seems to stay very long. As soon as we make friends, they seem to move back to where ever "home" is. =( Bummer.
Run a marathon...join a training program. Play adult soccer. Take a masters swim class. Sign up for cake decorating classes. Join a church with a good young adults program. Find a community band. Hmmmm, most of the things I did were sports related, but I met a lot of great people there.
Another though...do you have a Clemson club in your area? We would meet a group in Dallas to watch the games. Truth be told, I hated the Clemson club. I am not sure why. I think I just didn't like sitting in a bar for 4 hours.
